Pathways: Medical Insurance Billing for Medical Office

Students should expect to spend approximately 20-30 hours each week studying at their computer from home and must be available for scheduled “virtual classroom” session.Students will need a home computer with a sound card, headset, microphone and internet access (no dial-up). This class is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of complex issues involved in the medical insurance billing industry and is for individuals seeking skills in insurance billing, electronic claim submission, HIPAA privacy, ICD-9 and CPT coding (ICD-10 Coding training will be incorporated into this course according to industry change), documentation requirements, claim denial resolution, and collections. Coding and documentation is explored in areas of Evaluation and Management, procedures, diagnostic reporting, and modifiers. CMS-1500 and 837P formats, ERA (electronic remittance advice), and payer transmission reports are examined. Learn how to interpret the EOB (explanation of benefits), and how to resolve payer denials with emphasis on maximizing revenue. Revenue cycle and fee schedule management skills are covered. Physician and hospital billing is included.

Optional Internship:

Students wanting hands-on experience can choose the option to develop and participate in an internship for college credit through the PCC Occupational Skills Training program. Developing an internship is much like looking for work. Students take the lead role in finding an employer to provide the work site for an internship. PCC does not "provide" you with an internship. The Career Planning class assists students in developing an internship. PCC Occupational Skills Training then works with the employer during the internship period and PCC covers the workman's compensation for the student during the internship.

Features:

  • Career Pathways students participate in two hours a week of Career Planning [pdf] in addition to the PCC Medical Insurance Billing class. A cohort learning community is developed and an Employment Specialist supports Career Pathways students as they pursue internship development and employment in this field.
  • Training is on the State of Oregon Eligible Training Provider list (WIA).
  • This training is offered in partnership with PCC Institute for Health Professionals and PCC Occupational Skills Department.
