Pathways: VESL Entry Level Accounting Clerk (VELAC)

This two term Pathway is designed for students pursuing entry-level work as accounting or bookkeeping clerks. The target wage for General Office Clerks in the Portland metropolitan area is: $10-$14/hr (Source:  Oregon's Labor Market Information System, www.qualityinfo.org).

Students gain a theoretical knowledge base in business and accounting while learning practical skills associated with the accounting field. In addition to the course work students can complete a supervised internship which allows them the opportunity to apply their classroom learning to a real life work situation. At the conclusion of the Pathway students receive a training award and are qualified for entry-level work in a broad array of businesses and industries.

Features

  • Participate in an ESOL Support Course which supports the Business and Accounting Courses as well as offers language, job preparation and internship support.
  • Earn college credit that may be applicable to the PCC Accounting Clerk Certificate or Associate of Applied Science degree programs.
  • Courses in this training are on the Oregon Eligible Training Program List under Accounting Clerk Certificate.
  • Offered in partnership with PCC ESOL and Rock Creek Business Administration Departments.

Prerequisites

  • (Recommend) High School Diploma or GED (from your home country is acceptable).
  • Previous experience in Accounting make
  • Completion of Level 5 ESOL replaces the need to complete the COMPASS ESL Test.
  • Completion of a COMPASS placement exam at a PCC testing office with placement into:  ESOL Level 6 or higher, and Math 60.

What should I do next to get into the training?

  1. Attend an Orientation (see dates and times above).
  2. Apply for Admission to the College.
  3. Take the college placement exam workshop (optional).
  4. Take the COMPASS placement exam. You can call one of the PCC testing centers for the exam schedules.
  5. Complete the PCC online student orientation.
