Pathways: VESL CNA 1 (Certified Nursing Assistant)
The purpose of this 6-month training is to prepare non-native English speakers for the Oregon State
Board of Nursing Certified Nursing Assistant license and train for employment in a Nursing Facility.
Participants must have a minimum of intermediate to high level speaking, reading and writing skills
sufficient for communicating in a health care environment. This training will introduce students to the skills, communication, safety issues related to being a CNA 1 (Certified Nursing Assistant).
The class will also include an English language support class, to assist students with reading, writing and communication. All students will participate in a clinical experience to get the necessary hours required to obtain the Oregon State Nursing Board License. There is no employment obligation on the part of the health care facilities or the program but students will be encouraged to apply for any open positions upon completion of the training.
average starting wages are from $10 to $14 per hour.

This training is for non-native English speakers. Placement into Level 6 ESOL is required for this training.
- ESL Vocational CNA 1 is listed on the State of Oregon Eligible Training Provider list.
- This non-credit course is approved as a State of Oregon Occupational Preparatory course.
- The training includes classroom instruction, internships, job search and placement services.
- Clean criminal background is required for HOPE Grant recipients.
