Gerontology/Activity Assistant
This short-term intensive training is designed for students pursuing careers in community-based health, wellness and daycare programs for older adults, as well as skilled-nursing facilities. Students will complete the training in two terms while earning 24 credits and a certificate.
Students will gain the skills to do assessments and documentation; design, schedule and implement appropriately designed activity programs; and understand the role that stress, nutrition and disease play in an individual's overall wellness. Students will also explore the socio-cultural conditions of the aging process through a life-course perspective.
Classes will be held in a combination of formats including online, ITWeb and/or classroom instruction.
Spring term training begins March 31, 2008. The pathway can be completed in the following two-term sequences:
Spring/Fall 08
Fall 08/Winter 09
Winter/Spring 09
The second term schedule of classes and internship is decided by the student through the regular PCC system.

Features
- Career Pathways students participate in a Career Planning course three hours each week.
- Through the Career Planning course a cohort learning community is developed and supports students as they pursue employment in the field of gerontology.
- Students earn college credit that may be applicable to the PCC Gerontology One-Year Certificate or Associate of Applied Science degree.
- Offered in partnership with the PCC Sylvania Gerontology Department.

Prerequisites
- Students must possess a High School Diploma or GED.
- Complete a COMPASS exam at a PCC testing office with placement into: Writing 121, Reading 115, and Math 20.
