What is it?

Essentially, the OS is like a traffic cop: it makes sure that different programs and users running at the same time do not run into each other. The operating system is the most important program that runs on your computer – it manages all other hardware and software resources. This includes basic tasks such as managing files, controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing system requests, controlling input and output devices such as printers and CDs or floppy disks, and facilitating networking to another computer or a printer. Through the operating system you will access and save your files and documents, delete unwanted documents and customize your settings so that your computer looks and operates the way you want it to.

Is it right for you?

Mastering operating system technology means you'll be in the position to safeguard the very foundation of any company's computer workstations. The most common operating systems used today are Windows, UNIX, Linux and Macintosh – of these, Windows is the most popular operating system for individual workstations and is used by more people than all of the others combined. Your skills will always be relevant with OS management training.
