On-site language training allows Providence Health employees to build healthy careers

CWT and Providence initiated a pilot project in 1998 that has developed into an on-going program that offered three levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) training specifically customized for PPMC’s Environmental and Food Services staff. More than 130 non-native English speaking employees received over 4,600 hours of customized ESL. The program was a key component of the non-native English speaking staff’s career ladder. Employees completing Level 3 were encouraged by PPMC to seek more complex, higher-paying jobs within PPMC. The success of this program prompted interest for Providence St. Vincent’s to implement a similar program.
