The Nursing Assistant Training Program is an Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) approved program offered at PCC's CLIMB for Health Professionals. It consists of 75 hours of required classroom and lab skills demonstration, and 75 hours of required clinical practice in a Skilled Nursing Facility. We offer both day and evening classes, as well as westside and eastside clinical sites. We also offer, for those who qualify, a 3 day hospital rotation as part of the clinical experience. This training allows students to obtain employment in many areas of the medical field; such as Assisted Living Facilities (ALF), Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF), Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF), and Hospitals. By state regulations a student may be employed at a nursing facility, either ICF or SNF, after only 40 hours of classroom completion. All of our clinical sites hire our graduates. Upon completion of this program and state certification as a CNA 1, you will be eligible to begin the CNA 2 program.

Certificate

Upon graduation the student will receive a certificate of completion and be recognized as a Nursing Assistant (NA). Upon successful completion of the required OSBN exam the student will be a Certified Nursing Assistant 1 (CNA 1). Our students have a higher passing percentage than the Oregon average and we offer State testing in our building for our students to have a more comfortable experience with the test.

Program Overview

Students must attend a mandatory orientation and fingerprinting session prior to the first day of class. Attendance is required for all class/lab hours as well as clinical hours. Make-up class/lab and clinical days are made available for an extra charge. The OSBN requires each student to have a current Adult CPR card or Health Care Provider CPR card, from either Red Cross or American Heart Association, prior to the start of clinicals. PCC offers American Heart Association CPR classes; both Adult CPR and Health Care Provider. The required textbook (Mosby’s Textbook for Nursing Assistants, 7th ed.) and supplies (gait belt and stethoscope) are available at Sylvania and Southeast Center bookstores. Students will be given other instructional materials on the first day of class including a lab skills packet. Homework is:

  • reading the required text and skills
  • practicing the skills prior to lab times
  • one written skill
  • and one 5 minute disease presentation to be given to the class orally.
