Earth Week 2008!

Sylvania Earth Week will be April 21st – April 23rd! The Upper CC mall will be alive with films, fun events, food, and fairs. Check out the PCC Earth Day website for specific information: http://www.pcc.edu/about/sustainability/Earth_Day_2008.html *We need certified food handlers to volunteer to run the veggie dog taste-off!

Sylvania Green Team

The Green Team is a campus sustainability group comprised of students, faculty and staff. The next Green Team meetings will be two Earth Day planning meetings on Tuesday April 15th at 10am and Friday April 18th at 10am. The meetings will be in the Environmental Center (CC260). Please join us in making this year’s earth week a success! Contact Alliyah.mirza@pcc.edu for questions.

Recycling

Over the next week, keep your eyes out for brand new recycling displays in the Sylvania cafeteria. The new cafeteria recycling system will include additional labeled bins for glass recycling, educational displays on recyclable service ware, and new stickers.

Energy Conservation

Energy Conservation Tip #329: “Hang your clothes outside to dry in the nice spring weather to save on dryer use.” This tip was brought to you by the Sylvania Energy Conservation Committee. If you have energy conservation tips, let us know your thoughts: Joshua.Liebschutz@pcc.edu

Learning Garden

The Sylvania Learning Garden is off to a good start. Learning garden groups are actively planting vegetables and flowers. Food Services has hired a sustainable food services assistant who will be building raised beds soon!

The Mug Board

Since the mug board’s inception, Food Services has noted a marked increase in the amount of coffee purchased with mugs at Sylvania! We hope to see these numbers continue to increase as the amount of coffee cup waste decreases. The Sylvania Environmental Center is continually taking donations of mugs, so please drop them by CC260 or make arrangements by calling the E-center at x8342.

Recycling

Did you know that the piece of trash in your hand is probably recyclable?  Help close the loop.  Drop your paper products, cans and bottles, and polystyrene plates into a recycle bin – not the garbage can.  For more information on upcoming recycling programs - contact Alliyah.mirza@pcc.edu

The Mug Board

Save Green, Be Green -- Use a Mug!  Thanks to the support of the Sylvania Campus, we met our collection goal of 60 mugs for the Mug Board.  The Sylvania Mug Board is now up and running near the cafeteria.  Helping the planet is as easy as 1, 2, 3 – Grab, Use, & Return.

Learning Garden

The Learning Garden now has plots proposed for:  The Child Development Center, The Environmental Center, The Gerontology Department, Josh Liebschutz’s Environmental Chemistry class, and April Fong’s Biology classes.  A big thank you to our Learning Gardens Coordinator and the PCC grounds department for supporting these projects.  For more information contact:  Jerry.Blossom@pcc.edu
