Let Your Creative Juices Flow

What started as a fledgling arts program at the Sylvania campus of Portland Community College nearly 20 years ago has evolved into the Summer Arts Institute – a thriving series of intense, for-credit art courses that attracts hundreds of students each year!

Photography, ceramics, Hip Hop, theatre appreciation…the list of course offerings goes on and on. And the institute offers "niche" courses, too – from portrait drawing, to art history and development of Chinese and Japanese gardens, to artful letter-writing that pairs writing with drawing materials and paint.

Welcoming artists young and old, amateur and professional, the Summer Arts Institute reaches out to a diverse community: continuing PCC students, visiting students and those graduating from high schools across the region, as well as new and continuing non-degree students.

If you're looking to continue your arts education, hone your technique or simply have fun, the Summer Arts Institute is ready and waiting for you!

Visual Arts

Student's artwork

Summer Arts Institute courses represent a unique sample of classes and genres that give our students the chance to experiment and have fun at the same time they’re earning college credits. An example of a specialty course could be History of American Resident Architecture, where students will learn about historical origins and elements of American house styles and how they relate to those in our era.” Gene Flores, art department faculty chair, PCC Sylvania

Dance

Dance students

This summer we’ll offer an Introduction to Tango class, enabling students to develop the fundamental principles of the dance, with emphasis put on proper partnering, style, and phrasing. It’s a beginning course, but one that gets students inspired and wanting to learn more.”Heidi Dyer, dance instructor

Music

Saxophone

A ‘guitar book camp’ of sorts – officially called Guitar Clinic – will be offered as part of the Summer Arts Institute, focusing on guitar technique as applied to classical, acoustic and electric guitar playing. Warm-ups, development of finger dexterity, fretting hand strength/endurance, and good tone production are all a part of the mix. Guitar enthusiasts are encouraged and welcomed!John Mery, music instructor

Theater Arts

How I Learned to Drive production

In the Summer Arts Institute course, Theatre Appreciation, students will get the chance to attend live theatrical productions in the Portland area, to enrich their understanding of the theatrical event. Students will attend productions, write critiques and learn to appreciate the production from the viewpoints of the actors, directors, playwrights, designers and audience.Doris Werkman, performing arts faculty chair, PCC Sylvania
