Reproduction of Music

Reproduction of printed music is limited to the following:

  • Emergency copying may be done to replace purchased copies which are on order but not available for an imminent performance.
  • They must be destroyed when the purchased copies are received.
  • Copying for teaching purposes other than performance is permitted as long as the copies are excerpts from the work and do not comprise a performable unit.
  • In no case may this be more than ten percent of the work, not to exceed one copy per student.
  • A single copy of a complete work is permitted to be made for teaching purposes if other than performance, if the copyright holder confirms that it is out of print or it is unavailable except in a longer work, the purpose of the copying is for classroom use or scholarly research.
  • Printed purchased copies may be simplified if the fundamental work is not distorted or the lyrics altered.
  • All copies must include the copyright notice.

Absolute prohibitions when reproducing printed music:

  • No copying of music for the purpose of performance is allowed except as indicated above.
  • Copying to create or substitute for anthologies or collective works.
  • Copy of consumables such as work books, exercises, etc.
  • Copying for the purpose of substitution for the purchase of music.
  • Copying without inclusion of the copyright notice.

Recording of music in limited to:

  • A single copy of recordings of a student performance may be retained for evaluation or rehearsal purposes.
  • A single copy of a segment of a sound recording of copyrighted music may be made for the purpose of making exercises and examinations. (This pertains only to the music and not to copyrights on the sound recording).
