Copying for Instructor Use

A single copy may be made by an instructor for use in research, or teaching, or in preparation for teaching a class, of the following:

  • a chapter from a book
  • an article from a periodical or newspaper
  • a short story, short essay or short poem, whether or not from a collective work

Absolute prohibitions when copying for classroom use for or by an instructor:

  • A copy of works to create or to substitute for anthologies or other collective works.
  • A copy of "consumable" materials such as workbooks, standardized tests, test booklets, answer sheets, work sheets, etc.
  • Substitute copying for purchase of books, periodicals or reprints.
  • Copying repeatedly with respect to the same item by the same instructor from term to term.
  • Directing copies of the above prohibitions to be made by subordinates.

Areas of Extreme Caution

Since most instructor-developed course packets are systematically duplicated from term to term and are sold via the Bookstore, they DO NOT fall under fair use guidelines and MUST have copyright clearance obtained from the publisher for materials incorporated into them.

Faculty/staff that utilize walk-up copiers assume all responsibility for following copyright policy and law.

Faculty/staff that take materials to off-campus vendors for reproduction assume all responsibility and liability for copyright compliance.

Violations are a personal liability and can cost you and the college a lot of money.
