The bargain is this: we as a society give limited property rights to creators to encourage them to produce culture; at the same time, we give other creators the chance to use that same copyrighted material, without permission or payment, in some circumstances. Most copyright-related questions that come up at PCC have to do with the use of copyrighted materials in the context of a course. Many of these questions can be answered with a basic knowledge of a couple of areas of the copyright law, specifically fair use and the TEACH Act.
