Why study in Oaxaca?
Oaxaca is a beautiful, lively and artistic colonial city of approximately half a million inhabitants. It is located about 300 miles south of Mexico City. What’s special about Oaxaca is its atmosphere-at once relaxed and energetic, remote and cosmopolitan. Oaxaca is rich in culture and history. The zocalo is always bustling with activity, and at night there are frequent concerts of mariachi and marimba music. Interesting places to visit include: The Rufino Tamayo Museum with its Pre-Columbian collection, the 16th century Santo Domingo church and ex-convent (the impressive interior is covered in gold), the Macedonia Alcala Theater, La Casa de la Cultura, a restored 17th century convent that sponsors lectures, art exhibits and regional dance recitals. Nearby in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca are thriving villages with lively markets and spectacular ruins of pre-Hispanic Indian villages such as Monte Alban and Mitla.
