Housing Choices for F-1 International Students

PCC does not have a dormitory on campus. It is the student’s responsibility to find out the housing options. Our students live in a variety of housing arrangements depending on their needs and interests. Please see below some of the options available for you such as, the Homestay Program, Downtown Housing, Apartments nearby PCC and Temporary housing. It is strongly recommended that you carefully read and understand housing agreements before you sign or make any formal commitment.

The Homestay Program

If you choose to participate in the homestay Program, you will live with an American family.

  • Andeo Homestays

The families have been carefully chosen and their homes are located near a bus stop. Students may choose between three types of homestays. For more information about the program, see the Andeo Homestay website.

Classic Homestay:

  • Approximately 3 months (1 School Term)
  • For students who want to fully experience life as part of a family

Your host family will provide you with a comfortable room, all meals when you are home, and supplies so you can pack your own lunch on school days. Mealtimes with your family are a great chance to use your English and learn more about American culture.

Cost Per Term:
$2250
Placement Fee:
$330 (non-refundable)

Short Term Homestay (**only for government sponsored students):

  • Exactly 1 month (30 Days)*
  • For students who plan to find their own housing , but want to spend their first month with a family

The short-term homestay program is designed only for more independent students who plan to move to an apartment shortly after they arrive in Portland. The homestay offers all the features of the Classic Homestay, but is limited to one month. If after one month you decide that you want to stay in a homestay, you can change to a Classic or Bed & Breakfast homestay program. However you may need to move to a different family or pay an additional placement fee. If you think you may want to stay more than one month in your homestay, Andeo recommends that you apply for the Classic homestay program.

Cost Per Term:
$750
Placement Fee:
$330 (non-refundable)

All of the homestay options include electricity, heat, internet access, telephone, and use of the laundry facilities in the home. To participate in a homestay please send the homestay application along with the $330 placement fee as early as possible - we recommend you apply at least 45 days prior to your arrival. You will receive information about your host family before you arrive in Portland. You must be at least 18 years old to participate in a homestay program.

  • Americay Homestay Network

The American Homestay Network has host families all over the Portland area that are excited to host international students from just one month to a full year.  Prices range from $550 per month for a home averaging 45 minutes from campus by public bus with no meals to $870 for homes averaging 20 minutes from campus with 3 meals.  You can find out more at http://www.homestaynetwork.com/students/students/ or email Jason Carnahan, their regional manager at jason@homestaynetwork.com.

Apartments Nearby PCC Campuses

There are several apartments located near all three PCC campuses. Many students have enjoyed living in these areas because they are either within walking distance of the college or a short bus ride away. It is best to apply at least two months before you arrive as the apartments are in great demand. If interested, you should contact the apartments listed below for more information. Please note that furniture is not included in apartments.

Average apartment cost

  • Studio $500.00-$650.00/month
  • 1 Bedroom $600.00-$850.00/month
  • 2 Bedroom $750.00-$950.00/month
  • 3 Bedroom $900.00-1500.00/month

These prices do not include utilities. The apartments range in price according to area they are located at, amenities, floor level, and age of the apartment building. When you rent an apartment, be sure you understand the lease agreement before you sign. Many lease agreements are for 6 months or 1 year. Other Apartments in Portland

There is a website where you can find out the availability of other rental apartments or houses in Portland.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Go to the website www.apartmentbluebook.com
  2. At the search box, select the state of Oregon and the city or zip code of the area you plan to live in.
  3. If you wish, you may customize your choices according to the price range and number of bedrooms.
  4. Click on the search button
  5. Click on the apartments offered to find more information about them. There will be the address, a more complete description of floor plans, prices, and what is included with the rent. Sometimes there will be a photo. You should compare the apartment location to the location of the PCC campus you will be attending. Remember to ask about the location of the nearest bus stop if you will be using the TriMet bus system to travel to PCC.
  6. There will be a place to click on to contact the apartment and to order an apartment bluebook for the Greater Portland/ Vancouver area to be sent to you. You can then go back to the list to view other apartments in your area of interest.

Sharing an Apartment or House

Some students choose to share housing while attending PCC. Below are the places in each campus where students find most information regarding shared housing.

Sylvania

Look outside of the SPIN office in the college center Building (CC Building, Room 101). There should be a bulletin board that posts information about students who are looking for other students to share an apartment or house.

Cascade

Located inside the Student Center Building (SC Building, Room 04) also called "The Underground." There is a student-housing bulletin board which has lists of housing near the Cascade campus.

Rock Creek

Look for the ASPCC desk in Building 3, Room 128. They should have a folder with listings of student housing options.

*Do not forget to look at other bulletin boards at your campus of choice. There are several other boards with various information about different types of housing choices.
