Summer Sustainability Institute

High school, community college and university instructors are invited to apply for this free professional development opportunity to improve their knowledge of sustainable design and construction issues, trends, technologies and industry best practices. Residential green building and energy efficiency experts from Earth Advantage and Energy Trust of Oregon will help lead the institute. This week-long training will combine workshops, discussions, and site visits to notable green projects throughout Portland, leaving attendees better informed, prepared and inspired to integrate sustainable design and building into their curriculum.
SSI Training Activities:
- Introduction to principles of sustainability (e.g. Natural Step framework, Eco-Footprinting, and LifeCycle Assessment)
- Course curriculum modules
- Field trips to green building sites/businesses that exemplify sustainability principles
- Discussions on pedagogy and how to incorporate sustainability principles/curriculum topics into courses.
- Evaluation techniques
- Free textbooks and resource lists for use in curriculum development
Qualifications
- Be a current educator from High school, 2-year institution, 4-year institution or union training school.
- Teach in a technology-related program such as: architectural design and drafting, building construction technology, engineering technology, facilities maintenance technology, energy management and landscape technology, or related fields.
- Agree to revise at least one course to reflect the skills and knowledge acquired during the Institute.
- Agree to either return to the one-day summit on Friday, September 11, or demonstrate through communication with the SSI faculty, the revisions in one course.
