This Year's Selection

Girl in translation book cover

When Kimberly Chang and her mother emigrate from Hong Kong to Brooklyn squalor, she quickly begins a secret double life: exceptional schoolgirl during the day, Chinatown sweatshop worker in the evenings. Through Kimberly’s story, author Jean Kwok, who also emigrated from Hong Kong as a young girl, brings to the page the lives of countless immigrants who are caught between the pressure to succeed in America, their duty to their family, and their own personal desires, exposing a world we rarely hear about.

Girl in Translation is a powerful but accessible read that provides a window into a world that most of us do not encounter but do experience indirectly through the challenges, frustrations, and triumphs that play out in the daily lives of our diverse population at PCC. The selection committee suggests that Girl in Translation would connect with a number of disciplines and areas of study such as History, Sociology, Comp/Lit, ESOL, Women's Studies, Economics, Business, Reading, and various career areas such as Allied Health.
