Please visit the Helzer Gallery to view the work of Rock Creek art students in our annual juried exhibition. Awards ceremony and reception will be held Thursday at 4pm.

Visual Arts Fair: Look, Ask, Participate. Daily Public Workshops and Demonstrations Featuring Chris Knight and Mark Andres

Knight and Andres begin their large collaborative painting created from scratch using a diverse range of source materials and modes.

Visual Arts Fair: Look, Ask, Participate. Daily Public Workshops and Demonstrations Featuring Mike McGovern, Richey Bellinger, Mylan Rakich and Michael Robinson

10am - 2pm, RC 3 Fountain Mall

Printmaker McGovern works with relief printmaking techniques and stencils to create unique DIY prints without the use of a printing press.

Ceramicist Bellinger demonstrates advanced wheel throwing and glazing techniques.

2007 Art Beat Featured Artist Rakich demonstrates his stone carving techniques with natural and casted stone.

Ceramicist Robinson demonstrates his "Urban Wood-fire Kiln."   His hand-built kiln uses wood ash and salt to create beautiful surfaces.  Today, the kiln is loaded and fired.  Stop by on Wednesday to see the results.

Oregon Universal Zulu Nation—Hip Hop Performance

12:30 noon - 1:30pm, RC 3 Fountain Mall

Oregon Universal is a non-profit based on the fundamentals of peace, love, unity, and having fun. Since 2005 they have been connecting with the community and sharing those fundamentals, spreading them with the use of Hip-hop. With diverse activities such as: after school programs, community art projects, food and clothing drives, performances, and their popular First Friday Zulu jam, they have become a favorite organization in the non-profit volunteer and hip-hop worlds.

Wednesday, May 8

Visual Arts Fair: Look, Ask, Participate. Daily Public Workshops and Demonstrations Featuring Chris Knight, Mark Andres, Erica Anderson, Donna Cole, Michael Robinson and Jim Leisy

10am - 2pm, RC 3 Fountain Mall

Andres and Knight create a large collaborative painting in public from scratch using a diverse range of source materials and modes.

Anderson creates a collection of portrait drawings representing the PCC community.  You can watch or participate directly in the process by sitting for the artist!

Ceramicist Cole demonstrates the ancient Japanese method of Raku, a dramatic and transforming process—as the pots are placed on a bed of leaves, see the resulting glaze effects.

Ceramicist Robinson concludes his "Urban Wood-fire Kiln" demonstration with the opening of the kiln and presentation of the creations.

Leisy conducts a workshop and demonstration focusing on the Van Dyke Brown Print process, a 19th century method for making photographic prints using natural light and minimal chemicals for developing.

Swansea—Music Performance

12:30 noon - 1:30pm, RC 3 Fountain Mall

Swansea formed in 2012 when Portland music mainstays, keyboardist/singer Rebecca Sanborn and drummer Ji Tanzer recruited Kansas City multi-instrumentalist/singer Kyleen King to expand the sound of their long standing duo project. As a trio, in 2012 the group released their first full length album Old Blood and completed two tours of the western United States. Additionally, in 2012 Swansea found significant success in licensing music for a diverse array of films, including the track & field documentary We Grew Wings and the feature length, multi-award winning drama Light of Mine. Stylistically, Swansea combine artful narrative and atmospheric sweep with a touch of off-the-cuff toughness--often drawing comparison to My Brightest Diamond, Feist and David Bazan.

Alan Higinbotham—Ceramics Demonstration

1pm - 3pm, RC 3 Room 125

A studio potter of more than 25 years, Alan Higinbotham demonstrates many of the techniques he uses every day. The focus will be on wheel thrown porcelain, creating pieces from flat to tall both large and small. Form alterations and assembled forms will also be covered in the demo.

Colin Melloy and Carson Ellis—Symposium on Collaborative Creation

Colin Melloy, lead singer and composer for The Decemberists, and author of the Wildwood series of novels, and Carson Ellis, illustrator for The Decemberists and the Wildwood series will answer questions on the nature of their artistic collaboration where music, art and creative writing converge.

Paula Rebsom—Sculpture Discussion

2pm - 3pm, RC 3 Room 112

Paula Rebsom speaks about her work exploring the many complex relationships that humans have formed with nature and the wild. Her sculptural practice incorporates a wide variety of media and strategies including construction of site-specific sets and props which she then documents and presents to the public in the form of photo or video documentation. She will also speak about her first public installation on the Marylhurst University campus that fuses together art, ecology, and the use of technology to extend our understanding of the natural and built environments.

Join Rock Creek faculty and students as we wrap up Artbeat 2013. Come see the Rock Creek Student Art Exhibition, performances by the Rock Creek choir and student clubs as well as readings by student writers. Yearly awards for Music and Visual Arts will be presented, and refreshments will be served.
