Mark Andres and Chris Knight - Painting Demonstration

The Rock Creek Mall becomes a huge artists' studio as PCC Art faculty Mark Andres and Christopher Knight collaborate on developing two large multiple-paneled paintings, starting from blank canvas over two days.

Visual Arts Fair Featuring Roxanne McGovern - Printmaking, Mylan Rakich - Stone Carving, Michael Robinson - Wood/Salt Fire
10am - 2pm, RC Fountain Mall
Roxanne McGovern: McGovern demonstrates the wood block printing process. The prints are a part of an editioned artist book that is a continuation of the collaborative work she has been doing with her husband Mike McGovern under the moniker Owl Cat Ink.
Mylan Rakich: 2007 PCC Art beat featured artist Mylan Rakich provides a demonstration of stone carving techniques with natural and casted stone. For the last six years Mylan's sculptures have been a regular presence at Butters Gallery in Portland, OR, while most recently his work can be seen in Lake Oswego's 2011 Gallery Without Walls outdoor exhibition. In addition to his work as a sculptor, Rakich also teaches art and welding courses at Portland Community College, Clackamas Community College, and University of Portland.
Michael Robinson: Portland based ceramicist Michael Robinson will be demonstrating his "Urban Wood-fire Kiln." His hand-built kiln uses wood ash and salt to create beautiful one-of-a-kind surfaces. Tuesday, the kiln will be loaded and fired all day. Wednesday afternoon, stop by and see the results.
Rock and Roll Camp for Girls - Music Performance
12:30pm - 1:30pm, RC Fountain Mall
Tender Hooves will be opening Rock Creek's lunchtime music with their local brand of Rock-n-Roll. After the performance, Kayla Tabb, the bass player of Tender Hooves and Rock and Roll Camp for Girls instructor, will conduct a hands-on music workshop along with her bandmates. Come hear some solid riffs-maybe make a few of your own!- and find out about how RNRC4G builds self-esteem through music creation and performance.
Interdisciplinary Evening Featuring: Kafana Klub - Musical Performance, Alton Chung - Story Telling, Infinite Bossa - Musical Performance

Kafana Klub: Enjoy an exotic and spirited blend of dance music from the Balkans and beyond. Sublime vocals and sizzling instrumentals stir the feet as well as the soul.
Alton Chung: Chung grew up with the stories, superstitions, and magic of the Hawaiian Islands. This combined with his Japanese and Korean roots gives him a unique perspective to tell cultural tales and personal stories with a deep sense of reverence and authenticity. Not only does he breathe life into traditional Asian folktales with sensitivity and deep connection, but he also touches into the fire of ancient Hawaiian legends and tell them with passion and respect. In 2005, Alton was awarded the first J.J. Reneaux Emerging Artist Award by the National Storytelling Network and participated in the first National Story Night in Jonesboro, TN.
Pam Beaty: Pam Beaty, guitar and vocals, taught herself guitar as a kid, playing Beatles songs. She has a master’s degree in classical guitar but has played many styles, including rock and bluegrass. Her fascination with Brazilian music began after hearing Brazilian legend João Gilberto’s beautiful guitar and haunting voice. When she is not glued to her IPod listening to the latest Brazilian hits, she is teaching guitar at Portland Community College.
Nancy Durham: Nancy Durham began performing as a percussionist with the Balafon Marimba Ensemble (Shanakie Records) in the late 80’s; sharing venues with popular African groups like LadySmith Black Mambazo, Thomas Mapfumo, and Fela Kuti. She went on to play with Corvallis based jazz fusion group,“The Tone Sharks” (Louie Records); then Portland’s latin jazz band “Latin Quarter.” Nancy has sat in with various Portland bands over the last few years, including “Sambafeat” and “Key of Dreams.” Nancy is currently percussionist for world-folk fusion band, “Kendalin.” She also is the drummer for the Marylhurst Jazz Ensemble, and enjoys accompanying friends and colleagues for the occasional performance. Nancy has a degree in Cultural Anthropology from Oregon State, and is currently pursuing a degree in Music Therapy at Marylhurst University. Nancy began teaching drum lessons around 15 years ago. She has taught women’s drumming circles, music and movement for children, African style dance, afterschool enrichment (percussion) classes, and private drum lessons for children and adults. She currently offers private drum lessons from her home in West Linn.
Yukiko Vossen, Koto: “Yukiko Vossen’s performance on the Koto [Japanese harp] is exquisitely refined and dynamically vibrant.” Yukiko, born in Yamaguchi, received her primary training from Grand Master Masazumi Mizuno and Gasho Okuno. She received her pre-master certificate from Seiha Conservatory of Japanese Music with honors. Yukiko’s performances in the U.S. include concerts as an ensemble member under the direction of extraordinary Jazz shakuhachi (bamboo flute) player/ composer John Kaizan Neptune and the world renowned Koto virtuoso Kazue Sawai. During her most recent studies at Marylhurst University in Music Therapy, Yukiko has received musical direction from Mitsuki Dazai. Yukiko is a regular performer of concerts and lecture performances at colleges, libraries, and universities.
Peter Zisa, 8-string Classical Guitar: Peter Zisa is an accomplished award winning classical guitarist “ who delicately blends melodic line and texture into an exciting musical experience” (L.A. Times.) In his formative years he studied international guitarists David Grimes and Guy Horn, and in master classes with such renowned guitarists as Maestro Andres Segovia, Jose Rey Del La Torre, Oscar Ghiglia, Pepe and Angel Romero.
Infinite Bossa: What is it about Bossa Nova? It's sophisticated. It's timeless. It's seductive. The music that was born in Brazil in the 1950s lives on in the hearts of this new generation of interpreters.

Visual Arts Fair Featuring: Donna Cole - Handbuilding, Mike McGovern - Printmaking, Michael Robinson - Wood/Salt Fire

Donna Cole: Watch the dramatic and transforming process of clay through fire as glowing red pottery is pulled from the hot kiln. As these pots are placed on a bed of leaves, see the glaze effects created by the flames engulfing each piece. Ceramic Artist and PCC instructor Donna Cole demonstrates how she uses this ancient Japanese ceramic method of Raku firing to create her own contemporary works.
Mike McGovern: Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, in 2009 McGovern received his MFA from NIU and is currently working with his wife, Roxanne, on an ongoing printmaking collaboration under the moniker "Owl Cat Ink." He will be demonstrating mixed-media mono-prints through an exploration of multi-block printing.

Oregon Universal Zulu Nation - Hip Hop/Dance/Graffiti

All elements Hip Hop jam! DJs, Graffiti artists, MCs, Bboys and Bgirls make up the four main elements of Hip Hop culture. Come share the experience with the Oregon Universal Zulu Nation as they bring it all together with the fifth element: Knowledge.
The Universal Zulu Nation (UZN) is a pioneering force that has been in effect since the inception of Hip Hop itself in 1974, and UZN continues to represent and innovate the genre while striving for worldwide peace, equality and empowerment. UZN will be performing at all three PCC campuses and at Southeast Center.

Enie Vaisburd - Film Presentation

Enie Vaisburd, filmmaker and educator, shares her own films and talks about her creative process. Among the films is the program is her new film, Walk (2011), an experimental documentary exploring themes of fear and wonder through the eyes of children, the Hebrew language, and ancient Jewish texts; Agua (2004), which layers footage of the sea with text from escape legend Harry Houdini to take a look at our most precious resource and its ability to both preserve and endanger life; and Unwinding The Thread (1996), which interlaces transitory images from a journey by train through the lush Brazilian countryside and telephone conversations between a mother and daughter. Vaisburd is an Assistant Professor at Pacific University.
Don Sprague - Ceramics Demonstration

Don Sprague discusses the development of his work through over thirty years as an artist/potter and ceramics educator. Sprague will then demonstrate his powerful wheel-throwing technique and distinctive methods of decorating his clay pieces.

Join for a festive reception including music, literary readings and theatrical recitals from the Humanities Student Award winners. Visual Arts awards will be presented a 5pm.
This year’s juror, Tom Prochaska, a noted artist and educator, will select the work for the gallery exhibition and the five artists to receive awards. The four winners of the Rock Literary Award will read from their winning essays, stories and poems, and students from Rock Creek’s dance, music and theater clubs student clubs will also perform. Good refreshments, too!
