Phyllis Trowbridge demonstrates plein air painting from the north campus landscape.  Trowbridge paints landscapes year-round and exhibits her work locally.

Johnny Stallings’ Hamlet — Theatre Performance

Johnny Stallings performed his solo version of King Lear at Art Beat 2002.  He now returns with his new solo version of Hamlet.  Holly Johnson of The Oregonian finds it “magical…profoundly moving.”

Em-pow-HER:  Understanding the Power of Words.  S. Renee Mitchell, award-winning Oregonian columnist, will engage, entertain and delight you with a moving and courageous poetry reading accompanied by original music.  Her poems from her latest book, Tangoing with Tornadoes:  A Poetic Interpretation of Love, Lust and Regret, offer insights on how to recognize when words harm and then how to help yourself and others heal.
 S. Renee Mitchell will be reading at Southeast Center on Monday.

Michael Southern — Printmaking Demonstrating

Michael Southern, noted Northwest printmaker and painter, demonstrates the art of copper plate etching and proofing, a process that has changed little since the age of Rembrandt.


Skylark Tappers — Dance Performance

The Skylark Tappers literally get your feet moving with their high-energy tap dancing and interactive presentation.  After showcasing their dances from recent concerts, they will lead you through basic tap vocabulary.

Jan Underwood — Literary Reading

A werewolf so bad at moonlight hunting that they put him on the day shift; a mummy suffering from claustrophobia; a demon with a hidden human....  These and other monsters with identity crises are the subject of the darkly comic Day Shift Werewolf by Portland novelist and PCC instructor Jan Underwood.

Babette Harvey — Ceramics Demonstration

Babette Harvey’s intricately sculpted and carved figures have won several awards including Best of Show from the Oregon Potters Association.  Learn about her artistic endeavors and see her demonstrate her process for making figural wall pieces with detailed carving in both relief and sgraffito.
 Babette Harvey will be presenting at Southeast Center on Monday.

Johnny Stallings — Theatre Workshop

Drum Circle — Interactive Music Performance

Portland area world percussionist Adam Weiner leads a community drum circle—all are welcome, regardless of experience.  So join your community and celebrate the rhythm of spring!  Bring your drums; some drums will be provided.  Dancers are welcome too.

Ronna Neuenschwander — Slide Lecture

Nationally recognized Portland sculptor Ronna Neuenschwander presents a slide show covering her thirty years of art making.  Her presentation also highlights her over twenty years of journeys to West Africa, which have inspired her artwork and her life.

Craig Lesley, Senior Writer-in-Residence at Portland State University and author of Winterkill, The Sky Fisherman, and Burning Fence reads from his work and discuss transforming experience into writing.

Boka Marimba — Music Performance

A ten-member dance band, Boka Marimba plays exhilarating, energetic music from Zimbabwe and other areas of southeastern Africa.  Much is in Shona style:  melodic themes and variations layered in polyrhythmic, cyclic patterns.

Noted Northwest artist Laura Ross Paul discusses her paintings and drawings and her ongoing examination of the figure in painting.

NW Film Festival — Film Presentation

Culling its bounty from the region, the Northwest Film and Video Festival’s touring collection is a survey of the best recent works from independent artists.  Now in its thirty-second year, it offers Northwest artists recognition, critical appraisal, and enthusiastically engaged audiences.  Filmmaker Moran Hobart, director of the film (dawn) one moment to the next will be available after the screening to discuss his work.
